Renovating can be very frustrating and time consuming, but much easier when you have the right tools at hand!
If you are keen as mustard to start that new renovation project, then pause and take a moment to understand the necessary tools required for the task and the associated costs.
It may not be necessary to deck out your garage with a full-scale toolset and power tools – especially, as power tools are usually at the higher side of the price scale.
What usually happens is that we purchase and collect tools over time. As you tackle a specific task, for example installing flooring, you will most likely purchase the tools required for that particular task.
Starting a project, then having to stop mid-way through because the right tool is not in your garage, can be very time-consuming and frustrating. So, take the time to understand the right tools required for a particular task.
There are, however, five “standard” tools I personally recommend to have on hand (or in your garage). Not only are they a great investment, but you will find that you need one of these for most renovation tasks.
- Cordless battery-powered drill
You most likely guessed this first recommendation, but seriously, one of the first and most basic tools that is essential for all renovation tasks is a drill.
Using a power drill will not only allow you to finish a task much quicker than using the traditional hammer and nails, but it is the range of functionality, in terms of accessories it offers, where you will really enjoy the value and benefit of this multi-functional renovation essential.
The attachments include various sizes drill bits and screw sets to be used on different materials such as metal or timber. Once you understand which functionality and accessories you need for your particular task, and master how to use it effectively, your renovation project will become more streamlined.
There are a range of different types of drills available, for example a hammer drill, impact driver, etc. Speak to your local hardware store and purchase the right drill for your needs. There are also ‘lighter weighted’ options available for the ladies.
- High water-pressure washer or gurney
Essential for most outdoor renovation tasks is a gurney. Prior to painting exterior walls, gutters, window or door frames, the very first step will always be to clean the area thoroughly using a gurney. Or sometimes, the outdoor concrete areas, garage door or brick pavers simply need a good clean.
Combining exterior mould-removing cleaning agents with the power of the water pressure washer, works well for cleaning most outdoor areas.
- Spirit level
Whether you are hanging a new picture in the living room, building a deck, sheeting walls or tiling, a spirit level is a must!
To assure the accuracy of the task, a spirit level is used to indicate how parallel (level) or perpendicular (plumb) a surface is.
Spirit levels are available in various lengths, sizes, and brands and are a relatively affordable product.
You will be surprised how often you will reach for the spirit level to ensure a professional finish to your renovation project.
- Caulking gun
Caulking guns are available in various shapes and sizes and are used to apply silicon, No More Gaps, glues or sealants (sold in tubes) onto various surfaces.
Most renovation tasks require some sort of ‘finishing’ which will require the application of one or more of the above products.
You really only need to purchase one caulking gun and if safely stored in your garage or toolbox, it will last for many years.
- Cordless or electric sander
Sanding is part-and-parcel of renovating and is a very dusty and messy but essential step in many renovation processes.
For very small spaces, a sanding block, used by hand, will suffice. If, however, you need to sand a very large space, a battery-powered or electric sander will be your saving grace and get the job done much quicker!
There are different types, shapes, and sizes available, so chat to the local provider to choose the best for you!
